Vespadelus
There is a great deal of overlap and frequency variation between these species, so the identifications aren’t always clear. The calls often hav a shape of a fishhook.
Five different species are found in the eastern parts of NSW:
- Large Forest Bat (Vespadelus darlingtoni)
- Southern Forest Bat (Vespadelus regulus) Normally not possible to distinguish from V. darlingtoni.
- Large/Southern Forest Bat (Vespadelus darlingtoni/regulus)
- Little Forest Bat (Vespadelus vulturnus)
- Eastern Forest Bat (Vespadelus pumilus)
- Eastern Cave Bat (Vespadelus troughtoni) Not breeding in areas where recordings were made.
